Access Point Placement

Access point placement relative to the Wall Connectors is the most important factor in ensuring a stable Wi-Fi connection throughout the lifetime of the charging site.

For optimal Wi-Fi connectivity, please ensure the following:

  • Confirm that the Wi-Fi network is broadcasting on 2.4 GHz, the frequency supported by Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connectors and Universal Wall Connectors. This frequency offers a longer range.
  • Install the external antenna for the Access Point, when available. Do not skip antenna installation, even if the Access Point is close to the Wall Connectors.
  • Ensure a clear line of sight between the Wall Connectors and Access Point. If the line of sight is partially blocked, consider adjusting the mounting height and/or installing additional Access Points. Note that a vehicle parked between the Access Point and Wall Connector can affect performance.
  • If there are walls or support columns between the Wall Connector and Access Point, check the obstruction material and signal degradation in the Tesla One app under Wi-Fi Settings. Materials like concrete and metal can degrade wireless connectivity.
  • Configure the Wall Connectors closest to the Access Point as the Leader in a Group Power-managed configuration when possible.
  • Ensure that the wireless signal strength for each Wall Connector is above 45% (-67 dBm) in the Tesla One app under Wi-Fi settings. Add or reposition Access Points if the signal strength cannot meet this guideline. This is crucial for robust and uninterrupted connectivity.
  • Wireless repeaters are not recommended. Use additional Wireless Access Points to extend coverage.
  • Position the Access Point approximately 10 ft in front of the Wall Connectors for better wireless reception, when possible.
  • When installing the Wall Connector on a metal pedestal, position the Access Point so it faces the front or side of the Wall Connectors for optimal wireless reception.
  • Maintain a minimum installation height of 10 ft for the Wireless Access Point. If ceiling height limits this, reduce the permitted line-of-sight distance to the Wall Connector, as outlined in the table below.
Access Point install heightPermitted Line of Sight distance to Wall Connector
    10 to 12 ft (Recommended)80 ft
    8 to 9 ft60 ft
    7 to 8 ft40 ft

Wireless Access Point Configurations

Setting up the Internet Gateway or wireless Access Point is the responsibility of the installer unless instructed otherwise by the property owner. Following are some important configurations to pay attention to:

Internet Gateway Wireless Extension Access Point
Confirm Cellular network connection and strength X
Leave 2.4 Ghz enabled and disable the 5 Ghz band if not used X X
Provide property owner access credentials for the devices X X
Optional: Re-name the Wi-Fi SSID to reflect location and grouping X X
