System Operation

On-Grid

When a Powershare compatible vehicle is plugged in to the Universal Wall Connector or Gen 3 Wall Connector, the vehicle will charge during normal day-to-day operation.

Grid Outage

In the event of a utility grid outage, the Powerwall system islanding controller will detect the loss of power and automatically open the islanding contactor (in the Backup Gateway 2, Gateway 3, or Backup Switch), disconnecting the home's electrical system from the grid.

After the islanding contactor disconnects from the grid, Powerwall seamlessly begins powering the home; once Powerwall has reached a low state of energy, the Powershare-capable vehicle will begin powering the home and charging Powerwall. Once Powerwall has returned to a high state of energy the vehicle will stop discharging and Powerwall will resume providing backup power.

Grid Return

When the utility power comes back on, the system islanding controller detects the return of power and begins the process to verify that the system is ready to return to normal operation.

Powerwall / the vehicle stops supplying power and the home seamlessly transitions back to grid power.
