This document provides a high-level summary of the safety standards required for lithium-ion based electrochemical energy storage systems (ESS) as defined in NFPA 855, the International Fire Code, and the California Fire Code. It includes an overview of what each of those standards cover, some of the required safety tests, and the criteria needed to pass those tests. The primary focus is on the standards and tests that verify battery safety.
