Connect Powerwall 3 to Existing System

  1. Turn off all Powerwall 2 units using the On/Off switch on the left side of the unit.
  2. Turn off the Backup Gateway 2 breaker.
  3. Follow the instructions to wall-mount Powerwall 3 (and Expansion units if applicable) per the Powerwall 3 Installation Manual.
  4. Connect Powerwall 3 to an AC breaker as described in the installation manual.
  5. To connect Powerwall 3 to the existing system:
    1. Connect the communication wiring to the Powerwall 3 Tesla Asset Controller (TACO) as described in the installation manual.
    2. Remove the resistor when connecting the communication wiring from Powerwall 3. A resistor is not required.
    3. Connect the other end of the communication wiring to the top 4-pin socket (labeled “OUT”) in the Powerwall 2 wiring compartment. For a multi-unit system, connect to the last Powerwall 2 unit in the daisy chain.
    4. If the communication wiring has a drain wire:
      • Cut back the drain wire at the Powerwall 2.
      • Wrap the drain wire around the grounding conductor lead in the Powerwall 3.

  6. If Backup Gateway 2 is connected to a System Shutdown switch, disconnect the switch wiring and connect it to the Powerwall 3 TACO as described in the Powerwall 3 installation manual.
  7. Turn on all Powerwall 2 units.
  8. Turn on the Powerwall 3.
