Overview
Beginning with Powerwall software version 26.26, Powerwall 3 can be installed with an existing Powerwall
2 system with up to (4) Powerwall 2 units. This installation configuration can be used in the
following scenarios:
- An existing Powerwall 2 customer would like to add more storage to their system
- Up to two Powerwall 2 units in an existing system require replacement as part of warranty service (see the Installing New Powerwall 3 section in the Powerwall 3 Service Manual)
In this configuration, Powerwall 3 is installed and connected to Powerwall 2
via communication wiring. Important notes about this configuration include:
- During device setup, Powerwall 3 becomes the Site Controller for the system; Backup Gateway 2 remains the islanding controller and Site meter
- The Powerwall 3 On/Off switch controls the entire system; each Powerwall 2 switch only controls that unit

* Each Expansion unit adds 13.5 kWh of energy, but they do not increase system power. The maximum continuous charge of a system with Expansion units is 8 kW. Actual system power may be limited by state-specific phase imbalance requirements.
