General CT Installation Notes

CT Placement

  • The "Source this Side" label (or sticker) on the CT should always face toward the source
    • When measuring Solar, the sticker should face toward the inverter (away from the breaker)
    • When measuring Site, the sticker should face toward the grid (toward the breaker for a load-side connection, or toward the utility meter for a supply-side connection)
    • See Incorrect Orientation of the Current Transformer for an illustration of the CT orientation stickers
  • The CT must be placed on the phase that corresponds to the meter port it is connected to (see Current Transformer on Incorrect Phase for examples of correct and incorrect CT phase placement)

General CT Verification

  • Solar readings are always positive
    • Verify the Solar value on the Power Flow display is positive
    • Verify that the Solar value(s) match solar output as shown on the inverter, in a monitoring app, or by direct reading with a multimeter
  • Site readings will always be positive when there is no Solar present
    • If the Solar is verified, it can be shut off so that the Site can be verified without interference from Solar values
    • If the home has a Smart Meter, compare the instantaneous draw with the values on the Power Flow display
      • If there is no Smart Meter, use a multimeter to measure the amperage and resistance on the main conductors, and calculate the voltage. Voltage = Amperage * Resistance (Ohms)
    • If performing a service visit rather than an installation, turn the Powerwalls OFF to prevent battery discharge

Note
The Load reading is displayed in the Power Flow on the landing page as well as in the customer app. This value is not directly monitored, but rather is calculated using the Solar, Site, and/or Battery measurements.
