STEP 11: Turn On and Commission the System

Warning

Confirm the Powerwall 3 Enable switch and AC breaker are both OFF before terminating any wires at Powerwall 3, or before altering / removing any wiring.

Confirm the following steps have been completed BEFORE turning on the Powerwall 3 Enable switch and energizing the AC circuit:

MCIs have been installed in each PV string as described in Install Mid-Circuit Interrupters in PV Array
Each PV string has been tested as described in Test PV Strings with MCIs

Any damage to Powerwall 3 resulting from improper wiring will not be covered under warranty, and it will be the responsibility of the installer to replace the unit. See Avoiding Out-of-Warranty Damage to Powerwall 3 for more information.

*Leaving a Powerwall 3 system on and operating is preferred and recommended. The system will automatically be in a temporary Non-Export Self-Powered Mode while waiting for Permission to Operate (PTO). This allows the customer to immediately use the system for backup and start reaping the financial benefits of their system.

When PTO is received from the utility, there are two methods to enable grid export:

Customer: Have the customer change the Permission to Export setting to Yes in their app.
Installer: Using the Device Setup interface via Powerhub, change the Enable Exports setting to Enabled.

Commission the System

Close the AC circuit breaker for Powerwall 3 .
Turn the Powerwall 3 switch ON.
Launch the Tesla One app.
Note
Ensure Tesla One is updated to version 7.9.1 or greater, or install Tesla One if using for the first time.
Navigate to Device Setup to begin commissioning.

Select Scan and scan the Powerwall 3 QR label to connect to the TeslaPW Wi-Fi network.
- Scan the QR label on the Powerwall 3 Tesla Asset Controller (TACO) to commission the system.
- Do not scan the datamatrix on the side of Powerwall 3
Address any alerts to complete commissioning.
If solar is not yet / will not be installed, skip the PV commissioning steps.
- When commissioning a system with no solar, Powerwall will charge from grid until State of Energy (SOE) is 20%. This is expected behavior.
- When performing the Backup Test, select Solar is not expected.
Note
The Backup Test can be performed during the Backup Switch device update. There is no need to wait for the update to complete before performing the Backup Test.
Leave the system running in Tesla One.
Leave the Powerwall switch ON and the breaker CLOSED to enable charging.
Note
The Powerwall 3 On / Off switch has a locking mechanism. When the switch is locked it cannot be turned on. See Powerwall 3 Switch Locking Mechanism for more information.
