Determine Where to Install Backup Switch

Backup Switch can be installed behind the utility meter or in a standalone meter panel downstream of the utility meter. Installing Backup Switch behind the utility meter is the ideal installation configuration as it saves time and cost, but Backup Switch can be installed in a standalone meter panel in the following instances:

  • The utility does not allow Backup Switch to be installed behind the utility meter
  • Backup Switch is not mechanically compatible with the existing meter socket
  • The utility meter and/or meter socket is in poor condition and Backup Switch cannot be installed behind the utility meter (determined in Inspect the Meter and Meter Socket)
