Appendix I: Installing the Cold Weather Kit

The cold weather kit (Tesla P/N 1766691-xx-y) is for use on outdoor installations in cold climates to improve the performance of the Powerwall+ unit's Heat mode. The cold weather kit will be ineffective in extreme cold climates (classified as two or more consecutive days of -10°C temperature in a one year period). Always install indoors where possible for best system performance.
The cold weather kit must be installed before mounting the Powerwall+ battery assembly. Two people are required to complete this task.
  1. Fill any air gaps between Powerwall+ and the wall (for instance those caused by mounting against an uneven surface like vinyl siding or a strut substructure) by mounting a sheet of cement board against the wall. This will provide an even surface for mounting Powerwall+.

    Note
Use cement board or a material that meets all local requirements and is appropriate for the installation location. The material must be at least as wide as the Powerwall+ battery assembly back plate, and as tall as the mounting bracket. Ensure the fasteners used are of sufficient length so that they are embedded in the structural material. The fasteners must be long enough to penetrate the cement board and other finish materials and embed into the structural framing material per the minimum embedment dimension noted in Mounting Bracket Anchoring Details.

    Note
If Powerwall+ is being mounted against a smooth surface with no air gaps, no cement board is needed.
  2. Stand up the Powerwall+ battery assembly so that it rests on its bottom edge. One person should hold the unit in this position.
  3. Clean around the perimeter of the back plate with an alcohol wipe as shown below. Allow one to two minutes to ensure the alcohol has dried before proceeding.
  4. Cut foam strips and stick them along the perimeter of the back plate as shown below. The foam must cover the screw heads with no gaps between strips.
    • When cutting the foam for the right side of the back plate, leave extra length to navigate curves around the wiring box.
    • Install the foam strips 1 inch from the edge of the unit so that no foam is visible from the front of the unit.
  5. Apply firm pressure along the foam strips to engage the adhesive.

    Note
The effectiveness of the cold weather kit is dependent on the Powerwall+ battery assembly being installed against a perfectly flat wall with no obstructions behind the unit, as the foam strips are intended to seal the air gap between the unit and the wall. If the Powerwall+ battery assembly is floor mounted away from the wall, the cold weather kit will not be effective in improving performance.
