Powerwall 3 is Not Charging from Solar

Powerwall 3 in Self-Consumption mode is not charging even though solar is producing

Steps to Troubleshoot

  1. Toggle the Powerwall 3 Enable switch OFF then ON.
  2. Confirm the Powerwall 3 breaker is closed.
  3. Confirm the Powerwall 3 LED is on.
  4. Confirm the Powerwall 3 State of Energy is less than 100% on the landing page (if Powerwall 3 is at 100% reserve, it does not need to charge).
  5. If the Powerwall 3 has a low temperature (for instance, it was stored in a cold place immediately prior to installation) and it has been installed less than one hour, wait one more hour for it to begin charging.
  6. Confirm the CTs are facing the correct way:
    1. Locate the CT(s) used to measure the source that is displaying incorrect power flow readings.
    2. Verify the CT(s) are oriented such that the label is facing toward the source (away from the breaker).
      1. Solar Current Transformer: Label toward the inverter
      2. Site Current Transformer: Label toward the Grid
Figure 1. Tesla 100 A CT (for Backup Gateway 2) Orientation in Relation to Power Flow
  7. Confirm the CTs are measuring the correct phase:
    1. Locate the CT on the Meter page in the Device Setup interface in Tesla One.
    2. Determine which phase the CT should be measuring.
      • Backup Gateway 2 with Tesla 100 A CTs:
        CT1Line 1
        CT2Line 2
CT3Defaults to Line 1 but can be configured as Line 2 during device setup in Tesla One
    3. Verify the CT is measuring the correct phase.
  8. Check the Mode under Operation Settings on the Summary page in Tesla One. If the system is in Self-Consumption mode, Powerwall 3 charges from excess solar that would otherwise be exported. If the site is importing, Powerwall 3 doesn't have any excess generation from which to charge.
