Update Powerwall 3 Software

Powerwall 3 must be on software version 23.44.1 or later to perform Device Setup in Tesla One. If Powerwall 3 is on an earlier version, or if a software update is required for any other reason, an Update Required banner will indicate that the software version must be updated as follows.

  1. Select Software > Check for Update.
  2. If an update is available, select Perform Update and choose either Download on my phone (if this option is available) or Download on the Tesla device.

Option 1: Download on my phone

Note
If this option is not available, select Download on the Tesla device.

Download on my phone or sideloading allows you to download an update to your commissioning phone rather than directly to Powerwall 3. This method saves time, as cell phones generally have a much stronger and more reliable mobile connection, allowing for a faster download. The update downloaded on your commissioning phone can also be used repeatedly, meaning no software download is required until a new software version is available; at that time, the new update can be downloaded to the phone.

Important notes about the sideloading feature:
  • Perform the update via sideloading within two hours of turning on Powerwall 3. After two hours, the download directly to Powerwall 3 will begin automatically (see Option 2 below).
  • Powerwall 3 must still be connected to the Tesla server. See Configure Internet Connection to confirm the Powerwall 3 cellular network is connected.
  • Tesla One version 12.8 or later is required to use the sideloading feature.
  • Once the latest software version has been downloaded, it can be deployed to future installs without waiting for another download (until a new version is available).
  1. Select Download on my phone.
  2. When the download is complete, follow the onscreen prompts to connect to Powerwall 3 again.
  3. Select Send update from my phone.

    Note
Leave the phone near Powerwall 3 while the update is downloaded. If you take the phone away from Powerwall 3, it will disconnect and the update will fail.
  4. Wait for the update to be installed. Powerwall 3 will reboot and a Lost connection to Tesla Energy Gateway message will display; connect to Powerwall 3 again and select Software to confirm the update was successful.

Note
Select Remove Update from My Phone to delete an obsolete software version.

Option 2: Download on the Tesla device

Download on the Tesla device allows you to download an update directly to Powerwall 3 rather than to your commissioning phone. This method is often used when Powerwall 3 is connected to the Internet via customer's Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

  1. See Configure Internet Connection to confirm Powerwall 3 is connected to the Internet via customer's Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Select Download on the Tesla device.
  3. Wait for the update to be downloaded and installed. Powerwall 3 will reboot and a Lost connection to Tesla Energy Gateway message will display; connect to Powerwall 3 again and select Software to confirm the update was successful.
